So what can we do to ensure that millions and millions of people worldwide are able receive suitable drinking water? Thousands of gallons of water are wasted each and every day. Those of us who are fortunate enough to have limited access to drinkable water need to conserve our water usage.
Conservation of water usage tactics:
Don't let the water run when you brush your teeth or shave.
Turn faucets off completely to avoid drips and slow leaks.
Take short showers, not baths. Limit showers to 5 minutes or less.
Wash clothes when they are dirty, not just to remove wrinkles.
Launder full loads.
Cook food in as little water as possible. This also prevents loss of nutrients.
Select the proper size pans for cooking.
When hand washing dishes, use a pan of soapy water for washing and one of hot water for rinsing.
While waiting for faucet water to warm, catch it and use it for other purposes.
Pull out weeds to eliminate competition for water.
Cut grass to a length of three inches.
Getting involved in community efforts to identify shallow injection wells and to evaluate their contamination potential. If no such program exists, start one by enlisting the help of other private wells owners in your community. Look for multi-family developments, particularly those using cesspools, and local businesses such as industrial plants, service stations and dry cleaners. Inquire how they dispose of the wastes they generate.
